~:[CH13 - Day 213]:~ Life Hits You Hard

~:[CH13 - Day 213]:~ Life Hits You Hard

We didn't have normal practice today. We had a group that headed to the beach, as we had our annual bike ride. We shortened the ride to Seal Beach to allow us more time to enjoy the area. After eating, we enjoyed playing a few sets of volleyball and after, the athletes ran into the ocean. One funny moment during our games was an athlete diving for the ball and let's just say it didn't turn out too well. It reminded me about life. Life, at times, hit's you hard. It can be discouraging at time, it can leave you feeling worthless, and make you feel as there is no hope in the future. Life is not easy, but I hope you can find it in you to get up every time life knocks you down. The athlete laughed knowing just what happened. He got back up and we continued. Just like that, I hope we can get up and move on in life. Learn from your mistakes and keep pushing forward. At times you'll need a hand, some time, or even a break, but I hope we can find it in ourselves, to never give up. As I face tough times in my own life, I allow myself to take a break, find some time to breathe and reflect, then get back out there. I hope we call can do the same. After a long and busy stretch the past two weeks, I finally had an opportunity to take a break. I canceled my evening reservation, laid down on the couch and watched the Olympics until I fell asleep for a short nap. I got the rest I needed, knowing that it's necessary so I can have the energy to get back out there. Life hits you hard, but I know we're all strong enough to withstand those challenges and return stronger than before.

~:[CH13 - Day 212]:~ The Unseen

~:[CH13 - Day 212]:~ The Unseen

I put the final touches on my reel and uploaded it. It has been amazing to look back and think about all the people I've crossed paths with over my lifetime. While I have not met them all personally, here and there, I've got to capture some amazing moments with some incredible people. While I love seeing people be on stage, I really enjoy doing shoots that are behind the scenes when you see the hard work that is put into something. Running different events, I know the stress that comes with the behind the scenes work and most people don't realize how much work it takes to perfect what comes out of what we do. With every person whose path I cross, I often think about the work that goes into where they got to today. As I met people from all walks of life, it truly gets me to think about my own life and what changes I can make to improve the days ahead. As I relived this weekends events as I wrapped things up, most people will not see the work that went into capturing and creating this short video, but every time I watch this video, I will remember all those who I crossed paths with and the work that went into creating the things that people see and experience. As we enjoy the beautiful things of life, let's also appreciate the journey, which is often the part that comprises the majority of our lives, but few every have the opportunity to appreciate.

~:[CH13 - Day 211]:~ With the Flow of Traffic

~:[CH13 - Day 211]:~ With the Flow of Traffic

The only reason I was dreading heading to dinner was because of the traffic, however, it ended up not being too bad. Similarly, the restaurant also wasn't too busy. It was one of those days where things just seemed to go smoothly, thus, I enjoyed the flow of today's traffic. We can't always control how things will play out. When meeting with people, I constantly check how the traffic is, but even then, I can't always get an accurate prediction. Thus, I always plan on leaving a bit early (if possible), just so the person I am meeting isn't waiting around. I often plan for the worst, that way, when things roll smoothly, it's just a bonus. Extra time or a stress free venture, it's always a good bonus! Today's extra planning allowed me to browse around, get a little bit of work done and even get good parking! There will be days where even the greatest amount of planning cannot counter, but for the most part, my overzealous planning allows me to be prepared in any given situation so I don't have to stress about the flow of traffic. How do you approach life in these regards?

~:[CH13 - Day 210]:~ The Aura

~:[CH13 - Day 210]:~ The Aura

Kim Soo Hyun seemed to attract the largest crowd. When I looked behind me, a mob of people began to form and I was surprised. I probably shouldn't have been, considering his popularity, but with another popular group performing simultaneously, I wasn't sure who would draw the larger crowd. One thing I noticed is that he has an aura that people seemed to be drawn to. Confident, yet sincere; driven, yet appreciative. He said he loves to travel, but hasn't had the time to do so as of late, as the demands for his services has increased greatly. Many of these idols have a similar aura, as do many people you meet in your life. Of course, sometimes we are fooled by people who carry this aura, but at times, our intuition is correct. It's interesting to see the various personalities of the idols. Some seem more timid and not as comfortable on stage, others seem to enjoy the spotlight, while others are in between. As I walked away, I was a bit sad that I wouldn't be able to capture any of these incredible moments, yet simultaneous happy since I could rest a bit. On my way home, I kept thinking about how we can improve our aura. It's something that can't be force and most likely can't be taught. It's a process, which starts with building the various skills and qualities that will give you that confidence and that drive, without sacrificing who you are and the appreciation you have for the journey it took to get you there. I think that balance is difficult, which is why it's rare to see this same aura given off, even by celebrities. Regardless, we can work towards improving ourselves, not for the purpose of appearing better in the eyes of others, rather, to work on building the confidence we have in ourselves. As when we focus on what we need to work on, rather than trying to fix how we appear in front of others, we often can find a way to better adjust ourselves and lead us to a place where others may be drawn to us as well, no matter the field you are. Many of us don't seek that spotlight and are fine following along, maintain the peace and tranquility in our lives, still yet, there's no fault in working on yourself, While you may not build up an aura similar to Kim Soo Hyun, you'll find a way to gain the trust and respect of those around you, just by being and improved version of you. Let's challenge ourselves to find that balance and work on the things we need to in order to improve. While we may never have millions of fans cheering you on the world, you can still find a way to be the best version of yourself for the one person that you want to truly impress - yourself. I don't know the secret to getting that aura, but I am sure that it starts with being comfortable and happy with who you are.

~:[CH13 - Day 209]:~ Behind the Scenes

~:[CH13 - Day 209]:~ Behind the Scenes

As I captured the moments of KCON, I couldn't help to thinknof the many behind the scenes. The idols are talented and special, but all of this works because of those behind the scenes. The writers and producers, those who organize and plan, those who take care of every smaller detail and more. I'm lucky to know many of those whondo that at KCON, KPOP and life.pppp In coordinating events, while I hear the most back from those who attend, there are so many working parts that make it work. While we should sit back and enjoy the show or experience, let's always remember to thank those who work behind the scenes to make all the incredible things in life to happen, as they also deserve the spotlight. While I was hanging on by the end of the night, I walked back to my car happy, knowing that I survived the day, accomplished what I needed to and enjoyed quite an experience known as KCON.

~:[CH13 - Day 208]:~ Life's Sunset

~:[CH13 - Day 208]:~ Life's Sunset

It was only fitting that a sunset wrapped up our week as we enjoyed the pier at Santa Monica. When you reach the end of a chapter in your life, you think of all the great memories from that stretch and today wrapped up a beautiful week of memories. We closed the day with a run on the beach and the alpacas and llamas. It was such a range of activities and I only hope that at the end, each of them found something they'll remember and carry with them into their next chapter of life. I am ever so grateful for every chapter knowing that we never know what our ending will be. Cherish each moment and appreciate every sunset, as they are more precious than they may seem.

~:[CH13 - Day 207]:~ Kids Being Kids

~:[CH13 - Day 207]:~ Kids Being Kids

"Duck, Duck, Goose ..." It was fun to watch kids play a game many of us associate with our youth. In a time where discussions are often about APs or even just about technology and video games, they were playing a game as simple as this. I love seeing them enjoy simple games like this that don't require any technology or have any of those WOW factors. It's a game as simple as they come and they were out there enjoying themselves. It's a time where the kids are expected to grow up quickly, abandoning many of the things we remember from our youth, trading it for academies and the like, however, I feel like the most important foundation of my life was learning these things. It's great if they grow up to have a good job and be "successful," however, if they do that without learning how to interact with others, how to be a good person with character and most importantly, enjoy life, then what's the point? I have been glad to enjoy watching them have fun and see them carefree. This group has connected really well together and I am glad to see them make the most out of their time together. I hope they can continue to enjoy this timeframe where they can learn to be kids in its simplest form, because this is a treasure that is slowly becoming less emphasized in a time when these kids really just need time to be kids.

~:[CH13 - Day 206]:~ Hidden in the Valleys of Life

~:[CH13 - Day 206]:~ Hidden in the Valleys of Life

We woke up early to venture out into the mountains and take a nice hike. I was a little worried as the heat seemed to be creeping in, however, throughout the hike, we got the gift of the shade of the trees and the coolness bouncing off the water. We hit the typical trails as we ventured through the mountains, but we also found some beautiful gems within the valleys that we got to enjoy. Life is like that. Hidden within the valleys will be beautiful moments.  While some areas may be dark and hard to navigate, if you keep searching, you'll find things you never could have imagined. As we enjoyed our time venturing around, we encountered a number of hidden gems, as we saved them to add to our beautiful collection of treasures we call memories.

~:[CH13 - Day 205]:~ Sun & Fun

~:[CH13 - Day 205]:~ Sun & Fun

We ventured out on a light run through the salt marsh, before heading out to the beach and enjoying the sun. From the pier to the farmer's market, it was fun to sit back and relax a bit. There isn't a tight schedule, so it's nice to be able to relax a bit throughout the day. We finished the night ice skating and while the ice was a little rough and the rink a little crowded, it was great just being together. It's fun to see this group spend time together.  While they don't mind separating from each other, they also seem to travel as an entire group often. As we skated tonight, we were reminded that the time we have together is too limited and we should find ways to treasure each of these precious moments we have under the sun.

~:[CH13 - Day 204]:~ A Breath of Fresh Air

~:[CH13 - Day 204]:~ A Breath of Fresh Air

It's always great to go out and get some fresh air, especially in a scenic spot. Our team ventured out anf enjoyed the beauty of the coast together as we spent the day enjoying each other's company. Life is full of stress and pressure and it's nice to have a bit of time to relax and enjoy the beauty life has to offer. I always want to be able to take my friends from abroad to places such as these and always share pictures with them when I go, but for now, I also enjoy experiencing it myself regularly. I hope we all can get a chance to take a breath of fresh air and whenever you feel like life is suffocating you, take a second to step outside and give yourself a bit of time detached from the stressors of life.

~:[CH13 - Day 203]:~ Preparing the Counter

~:[CH13 - Day 203]:~ Preparing the Counter

It was quite interesting to attend my first EVO. I wasn't sure what to expect, but didn't know the crowds would be so massive and enthusiastic. The energy in the arena was amazing as they cheered on their favorite players. I did play a decent amount of games growing up, but I never was on a top tier level. I was always about average so seeing players on the elite level was quite amazing. What I noticed is how they tried their best to prepare a counter for the expected moves. Some had notes with them to prepare for the battle as everything was studied and minutely planned. However, just like in life, you can't always predict the curve balls that life will throw at you. In the end, I got caught up in the celebrations after the victory as I was taking photos of this epic moment. As I drove home, I thought about how we always prepare our best for what life throws at us and even the most prepared of us, won't be ready for everything. You just have to do your best to adjust and find a way to counter all the punches that life throws at you in hopes that you too will be celebrating your victories in life. I wish I could have stayed a bit longer, but with a full schedule, I had to go back to prepare and rest for the week ahead. I know there will be many things to deal with throughout the week, but after watching the competition, I know I'll just have to do my best to counter everything thrown my way.

~:[CH13 - Day 202]:~ (H)Ours & Days

~:[CH13 - Day 202]:~ (H)Ours & Days

I walked into DFesta LA and enjoyed the numerous KPOP displays available. I signed up to join this event to preview it and it was worth the time during a busy day. With morning practice and covering another event the next day, it was a full day. I am often asked, how I do what I do with the time available, it's because I break my days down into hours or even minutes. Instead of just looking at what can be accomplished in a day, you can break down and see what you can accompish in those hours you have as well. I also make sure that I spend those hours doing the things I want to do, taking control of that time. Make those hours in "ours." I was surprisingly not as tired as I thought when I arrived at my hotel. I was able to relax, enjoy a good meal, and smile as I looked back at all I was able to do with all the hours of this given day. Doing the things you want to with the time you have feels amazing and I hope that all of us can do something similar by taking control of your time and make it yours.

~:[CH13 - Day 201]:~ In Unity

~:[CH13 - Day 201]:~ In Unity

We ended up with a solid group at the bonfire. Although a bit smaller of a group, what I liked was that they moved together. They seemed to be unified as most of the day, they did everything together. These types of activities are good and bringing a group together, but this time was one of the first where the entire group moved as a pack through the day. It was a tough day as the only spot available was far from the parking lot as I carried everything slowly back and forth, but as I watched this group from the day to the sunset and beyond, I realized that every ounce of energy was worth it. For everyone who organizes events, I hope that you find a similar satisfaction, as I know that the energy you put into it, will help bring those involved closer together.

~:[CH13 - Day 200]:~ Never Back Down

~:[CH13 - Day 200]:~ Never Back Down

I know the athletes were tired as they battled up the hills at Central Park, however, they never backed down. With a time trial in the morning, the athletes had fatigued legs, but they didn't allow that to give anything less than their best. I love how much these athletes put into the sport. It's time, it's energy and it's heart. The temptation to stay home and vegetate is real, so a lot of respect goes out to these athletes who put their all and never back down. As we closed the night with a nice meal together, chatting and laughing, it made me smile knowing that their reward for all they sacrificed were these long-lasting connections they make and the will to push through when life calls for it.

~:[CH13 - Day 199]:~ Our Struggles Behind Our Smiles

~:[CH13 - Day 199]:~ Our Struggles Behind Our Smiles

As I watched Inside Out 2, it was a remind of the struggles that we all face on a daily basis. Our various emotions battle for power within our minds, leaves us exhausted and weary at times. It causes chaos and confusion and often, we wonder, what should we do. If we try to focus only on what is good, we often times forget about the many lessons we can make; while when we worry about things and become anxious, we often can drive ourselves into failure. As someone close to me pointed out, we never know what goes on behind the smile. A smile can be a sign that everything is okay. To our friends and family, we must always be alert, as often times, they give us signs when they are struggling, even when they appear they are not. I always appreciate those who reach out when they notice and I hope that I can do the same for others. As while if we just take a glance, we may only see a smile, but when we take the time to listen and observe, we can be the helping hand those around us need, to make that smile into the true emotion that is being felt. As I enjoyed an afternoon with an old friend, it was great to catch up and chat about a myriad of things. Most importantly, I felt the sense that we both could rely on each other, even though it's been some time since we have seen each other last. As friends, we've been through thick and thin and I know, it's people like this that I know will help me keep revealing a smile that is genuine, as they bring the joy and happiness to life. Find those who can be that foundation for you and help you find that genuine  smile that you've been missing, As while it's easy to mask the pain and suffering you're facing, it becomes that much easier when you know that you've got a support system ready and waiting to help keep you going. To all those who are "that" person for somebody, thank you!

~:[CH13 - Day 198]:~ Focus & Fun

~:[CH13 - Day 198]:~ Focus & Fun

It's good to be focused on your goals and what you want to accomplish, but taking it too serious could actually be a detriment to you at times. I think sometimes we get so wrapped up in what we are aiming for, that we forget about some of the intangibles that will get us to where we want to be. The smaller interactions, the laughs, the time together are big keys in finding success. This summer, we've had a smaller group, but I also feel that this group is pretty cohesive. They spend time together outside of practice and really relate to each other well. While they may not all be the best of friends, I think it's nice to see them work hard and also enjoy each other's company. Life is something that is full of goals, but when you reach those goals and you're standing there alone, it's not as exciting than when you can hear a chorus of voices raised to celebrate what you've accomplished. I'm hoping for this team, they find a mountain of success and together than can celebrate together, allowing their voices carry through the valleys and echo to all the peaks around.

~:[CH13 - Day 197]:~ Balance

~:[CH13 - Day 197]:~ Balance

How do you ensure balance in your life? Some work too hard; others play too hard. Keeping that balance is difficult. In Econ, we always discuss what the value of a high-paying job, when you aren't able to do the things you love, while also looking at not being afford to do what you love. It's always a slippery slope and many aren't able to find that balance. As I look at my time over the years, I've been better at finding that balance. I've determined the value of the things I do and spent time on those things which I think are valuable, whether it's personal time or going to attend and take photos at an event. There are so many choices we have to make in life and at the end of the day, I hope we make choices that provide balance to our lives. As I discussed this with my friends as we looked ahead, I know that life will provide these decisions and with each one, I'll remember to ensure that I keep this balance in mind. With practice every morning, I do my best to get work done, while also getting much needed rest, while also weaving in time for friends. It was great to go out and reconnect to ensure that I keep that balance between work and play. I hope we can all take a little time to reflect and see where our balance lies. Just like a food dish needs a nice delicate balance to be satisfying, life also needs that balance to provide just the right amount of flavor. For most people I know, they are working extremely hard and so I hope they can all find that time to be a little selfish and give themselves a little more balance in life for themselves.

~:[CH13 - Day 196]:~ Lucky 13

~:[CH13 - Day 196]:~ Lucky 13

"I made 13!" he shouted to me excitedly at the end of practice. It was great to hear such enthusiasm from him. Last fall, I noticed that he had trouble making it to the basket. However, similar to his teammates, he has become stronger and better at the sport. While making the shots is great, just the process of learning and growing as amazing to watch. I get to see it with students and athletes regularly and now I get to see my niece and nephew grow as well. In life, luck may exist, but your luck grows when you work and you practice. With my students and athletes, the work that they put in, sets them up for success. While they may not all accomplish what they hope for, they'll give themselves the best shot at it. You can only control so much in life, but you can definitely increase your odds by putting in the work, focusing in, learning and growing in the process. With more experience, these young ones will soon be running  up and down the court, improving with each year. No matter the number of shots that go in at the end of the day, the reality is, there we can help determine that amount of luck and help increase our number of "baskets" we make in life.

~:[CH13 - Day 195]:~ (Lost) Touch

~:[CH13 - Day 195]:~ (Lost) Touch

I got invited to preview the movie Touch. I went into the movie with very little expectations and was thoroughly impressed by the movie overall. It was also great to meet one of the cast members who is also a fairly well known casting director and producer. While I felt that there were some loose ends in the movie that needed to be tied, I felt like the movie was artistically created and took a fresh approach to telling this story. When I think of this movie, I think of those who we have a deep connection with in our lives who we always feel connected. While the movie is about romance, you can also look at the other various connections made, which is very applicable to the lives we live. While many people in our lives fade as the years go by, neither time or distance can disconnect us from certain people. There are those who always leave a lasting impression in your lives, even when you have lost touch. At random moments through my day, I think of certain people and wonder how they are doing. In those moments, I think back to precious memories I've shared with them and no matter how far they are or how long it's been, I know that when we reunite, it will be special. In the movie's case, the longing to reconnect comes at a crucial moment in the protagonist's life as the shy and timid individual slowly unpeels the layers, like the many layers of an onion. I think the depth the main character was unveiled layer by layer, which brought us back towards the end of the movie. His devotion, loyalty, passion, and determination were shown in a number of aspects, which also were connected to different phases in his life. While it may not have developed the full story as much as some may have wanted, I think the layers were important in telling this story to truly connect us with Kristofer. As a side note, I did truly enjoy them incorporating some history into the story, that helps us understand some of the untold struggles that were experienced by a particular group of people (general to avoid spoilers), as their story is also hidden within similar layers as the story is told. I think the story allows us to buy in, which allows them to truly connect with the characters, which is also key in taking command of our emotions. While I was familiar with these struggles, being a history teacher, I think it still struck a chord within me and allowed me to become more engaged in the story. In the end, the movie helped me remember that time and distance are irrelevant when the connection you make with someone has depth. The importance of those connections, whether romantic or not, can be the foundation of your life. Times will change and what you do moving forward will as well, but it doesn't mean that those relationships in your life will all become meaningless. Distance and time cannot compete against the power of someone who truly touches our hearts and our souls.

~:[CH13 - Day 194]:~ Building Connections

~:[CH13 - Day 194]:~ Building Connections

It may seem like a game of tag, but the game day Fridays are used to help build connections. Whether it's this game or another, the athletes must work together and find a way to do their best. Whether they come out on top or not, I know the day is filled with fun and laughter as they experience the joys of just being together. One thing I like about this game is that nobody is alone. Whether a pair or a trio, everybody is connected to at least one other person. For those who are new, they can connect with others, especially when sometimes it's difficult to make that first connection. It became an even more enjoyable Friday as we ended up playing a 3-on-3 king of the court. In the end, the team connected together and enjoyed the day and I left feeling pretty uplifted as I recall the laughter that the team had at the end of the game. The joy was noticeable and it also meant the beginning of new connections.

~:[CH13 - Day 193]:~ Powering Through

~:[CH13 - Day 193]:~ Powering Through

It's been a little challenging adjusting to the schedule. An early alarm, practice then a return to practice later that afternoon. It's great to be able to reconnect with the team after some time away, however, it can be exhausting at times. Of course, if life were easy, all of us would cruise through it. I think these tough times allow us to test ourselves, build a little grit and allow ourselves to power through. Similarly, my athletes have to deal with the same schedule as they battle the elements and work through these difficult workouts. One of the things with these workouts is, they're tougher than what they'll face in any competition. They use this day to help themselves power through difficult times later on. Those who sacrifice and join us, find ways to find success, while those who miss out, miss on great opportunities to build strength, both physically and mentally. With every test and challenge, work on things that you are struggling with so that when the time comes, you can power through!

~:[CH13 - Day 192]:~ Just a Hint of Sweetness

~:[CH13 - Day 192]:~ Just a Hint of Sweetness

Elaborate plans can be memorable, but so can things that are just a bit out of the ordinary. One of our traditions is the scavenger hunt, where groups go out and complete their tasks. The tasks are incredibly difficult, but it allows them to move around the city together and also get to know each other a bit more. With just a hint of sweetness, it can definitely change how you remember a particular moment. A small gesture from someone, a butterfly, watching a sunset or even a small compliment all can contribute to a memorable day and even change the direction of your day. Every day, we have the opportunity to add a bit of sweetness to someone's life. While we may not be the main course of their day, let's do our part to hand out droplets of sweetness, which may just wipe the bitterness of life away.

~:[CH13 - Day 191]:~ Battling the Heat

~:[CH13 - Day 191]:~ Battling the Heat

We had a solid group attend our afternoon practice today. Despite the temperatures creeping in the mid-80s, it seemed like the athletes heeded the advice and hydrated. They worked their way through the hills of the trail and ended with a solid workout. The heat can be grueling, but when you prepare for it, it becomes a lot easier to handle. While it still can break you down, it's less likely to. That's just like life. When you prepare for what's ahead, you're better equipped to handle the obstacles ahead. Sure, there will be some you cannot predict. Still yet, when you are able to prepare, you can give yourself the best opportunity for success. Today, we battled the hills and the heat and ended up success. It was quite nice to spend a little more time with the team today, as we did our typical meal after this workout. One of the keys of connecting people is to give them more time together to get to know each other. It's exhausting adjusting to this two-a-day, but it also meant a day that was productive and fulfilling.

~:[CH13 - Day 190]:~ Out of Rhythm

~:[CH13 - Day 190]:~ Out of Rhythm

Watching my athletes work on this drill, I thought about the coordination and rhythm it takes to complete it, however, today, I didn't feel that rhythm. I thought I had gotten myself back into the pace of things, as the adjustment is never too difficult, but my body has been telling me otherwise. I keep taking naps when I don't want to and haven't gotten around to completing everything I've needed to. These stretches can become frustrating, but it can also help you reset and find ways to adapt and adjust yourself. Being in rhythm feels amazing, when everything just seems to fall into place. However, when you're out of rhythm, it truly is a test for you, to see how you can use your tools and resources to get you back on track when you've gone astray. You learn more from when you are trying to find your rhythm, even when it feels like things are better when things are going smoothly. Don't get frustrated, but approach it like a puzzle. At times, you may feel like you're missing pieces, but if you are persistent, strategize a bit, and don't give up, eventually you'll find that satisfaction of the puzzle that you complete. When you look at a scenic view, it can be something you enjoy and soak it, but when you pieced together the puzzle of that scenic view, you truly can take a deeper appreciation, knowing all that it took to create this canvas you are staring at. For all those who find yourself out of rhythm, keep at it as eventually you'll find your way out of that rut and allow yourself to find that rhythm once again.

~:[CH13 - Day 189]:~ Following Your Taste Buds

~:[CH13 - Day 189]:~ Following Your Taste Buds

I don't think there is a particular flavor that would define me. I find that I cook according to my cravings. I am not sure if most fall into a sweet or savory category, but at times, I am all over the place. I do tend to lean towards the savory side of foods, still yet, I try to mix it up and adjust what I am cooking based on the mood for the day. While in Japan, most asked what I wanted to eat and it wasn't an easy thing to come up with. Sometimes, I don't know if it was what I was craving until it hits my taste buds and activates those senses. One of the days, the yuzu pepper set off that craving and I ended up coming back with a bottle. I think the flavors of Japan is one that connects me from when I transition from Japan to home or home to Japan. I eat a lot of Japanese food in both locations. I find it nice that I can adjust how I cook the food and can become a sensory overload sometimes when balancing the sweet, the salty, the sour and more. While at times, eating the food makes me miss being away even more, I am glad to be able to have more access to satisfying the variety of cravings I have for food throughout a given day. Thinking of this, I became curious of what people's preferences were. What are the types of foods, drinks or snacks that you crave? Is it bitter? sweet? salty? sour? Does your palette favor one side, is it balanced or unpredictable? No matter what, I hope that we all can enjoy the foods we crave and allow it to make us find some happiness, as the flavors bring us memories and make our senses come alive.

~:[CH13 - Day 188]:~ Clouded Visions

~:[CH13 - Day 188]:~ Clouded Visions

It was cold and windy. The entire time I've been back it's been hot and talk of record heat was discussed, but this morning, it wasn't. It's strange that on the days I go to the beach, it's like this, however, I guess that's life. We don't get the expected at times. Whether it's that we were just out of luck or our decisions were clouded by expectations of how things were, sometimes things don't pan out. Still yet, on a practice that we added to the calendar, it still ended up begin a good day and an opportunity to connect and begin our progress into this season. We can't always see what's ahead as different factors will cloud our vision, but it doesn't mean we still can't proceed and deal with the circumstances which we are dealt. This group today ended up making the most of the time we had and in the end, enjoyed the day. As it could have been an extra day of rest, I was glad that I decided to hold practice today and give the team an extra day to spend together to begin their journey ahead. What the future holds isn't too clear, still yet, I know that we'll proceed forward together and do our best to make the most of every moment, whether the circumstances provided to us are ideal or not. Let's make the most of what we're given and be ready to take on the challenges that come when we can't clearly see what lies ahead.

~:[CH13 - Day 187]:~ The Great Sort

~:[CH13 - Day 187]:~ The Great Sort

On the day I came back, I got right to sorting through my stuff. I did my laundry and organized my things, This typically doesn't happen right away, so it was quite amazing. Regardless, it's a great time to go back to relieve some moments. It also keeps me organized so I can process through a lot of the material and also realize the amount of work I did on this trip. Today was the digital sort as I organized my files and ensured that categorized everything and had it in order. Since I allowed myself to sleep in a bit, I didn't have as much time as I wanted, but still got everything completed. I collected over 80,000 files during the trip, which includes edited files, video clips and more. I really couldn't believe the staggering total. It means that I probably took about 40,000 photos (including my cell phone) during the month. I knew I did a lot of work of the course of my time, but I didn't realize that the number would be this staggering. As we sort out things in our lives, sometimes we'll uncover just how amazing some of our feats were and just how important things were. When we're going through it, sometimes it feels like a blur, but when we finally go back to sort things out, we discover more that lies under the layers that we didn't realize in the moment. I know there is still more to uncover, but for now, I'll appreciate the fact that I accomplished so much and will begin to dive deeper into each layer as I look back at things after completing this great sort. When time permits, go back through your things and I hope that while doing so, you'll realize all that you've accomplished and see aspects to things you didn't realize in the moment. It's a great opportunity to look back, reflect and appreciate the finer details that otherwise may have been buried away.

~:[CH13 - Day 186]:~ In Your Own Way

~:[CH13 - Day 186]:~ In Your Own Way

I wasn't sure if I would wake up in time, but I did. I was able to watch my athletes run the 4th of July race for the first time in awhile. It was great to see hoards of people out there celebrating and appreciating this holiday morning running together. It may not have been a ideal way to celebrate for everyone, but I think for each of us celebrating, we did it in a way we could enjoy it. I saw people camping out for spots at the park, others gathering at houses and some, just staying in. I ended up heading to the golf course, before relaxing watching shows and then catching the fireworks display, as I superimposed the library with the fireworks finale. Some people dressed festive, while others did comfortable. Some had BBQs, others went out to eat. We all have our own ways of doing things. There's no one way to do something. It's actually a great day to remind ourselves to accept our differences and our opinions, as it's a land that was created with the intent of being inclusive and accepting. We definitely have work to do in this capacity in this country, but I think if we can  work on unifying and understanding versus division and vilifying. As while we may do things in our own way, I hope we understand that we must keep our minds open to avoid thinking that our own way is the only way. As I watched a movie online, it focused on the struggles and perspectives on two people who were close to the end of their lives. They, and the people around them, coped with the situation differently, thinking their approach may have been best, when at times, it wasn't for others. In the end, the approach of the main characters, although different, provided the comfort they both needed to bring them peace. I hope we can do just that, live our own lives, while also maintaining peace with those around us. The only way we can do so, however, is by showing love, compassion, and understanding. While our own way might be the best way for us, remember that it's not the only way. We each are spectacular with the potential to light up a dark sky, but when we can do it together, we display something even more beautiful that we could have ever imagined. Happy 4th!

~:[CH13 - Day 185]:~ In Peace & Harmony

~:[CH13 - Day 185]:~ In Peace & Harmony

I headed downstairs early in the morning and dropped my bags off in the lobby. It was the first time that I every used a delivery service to get my bags to the airport. It was the best decision. With a little excess of what I normally take home, it would have been nearly impossible to make the transfer in a single trip, but by 9am, I was left with only my backpack and hours before my departure. I rested a bit and headed out to Kamakura, a place that I missed since I overslept. I locked my backpack in a locker and felt the most free as I wandered around the area. Sadness ran through my veins as I knew that I would be leaving soon, but a calm settled in me as I wandered around this town. While tourists filled the streets, it was much less than the crowds in the city or other major areas, so I took my time and enjoyed the area. I ate in a place where it was just me, as the refreshing dish, cooled me off and shaded me from the unrelenting sun overhead. My thighs burned as I trekked up a hillside at a local shrine, still yet, I was met with the cold ocean breeze that cooled me down. I found a bit of peace and harmony as I enjoyed my final few hours before departure. With every meeting, project, and interview done, I ventured around carefree. I arrived in time to the airport, was able to relax and enjoy a nice meal, and slept my way through the flight as I arrived home, finally. At some point in life, despite the ups and downs, you find a moment of peace and harmony. Where you and the environment vibe and find a equilibrium which brings balance to your life. You can't force it, as it arrives and departs on its own, but when it does, absorb it. As I felt the longing of wanting to stay longer, I was content with the sense of tranquility and calm. You can't always carry the weight of life on your shoulders. Every once in awhile, unload it and allow someone to help you transfer that burden temporarily until your next destination, as we need to all restore that peace and harmony in our lives. While it's possible to find in the chaos of life, only when you truly feel the weight lifting of your shoulders, do you give yourself the best chance to find the path that will help you find what has been buried deep inside. As I head into another busy stretch ahead, I was appreciative to have this moment to be refreshed. May we all find the time to give ourselves this opportunity, as it is not only welcomed, but necessary.

~:[CH13 - Day 184]:~ Isolation | Assimilation

~:[CH13 - Day 184]:~ Isolation | Assimilation

It's a little strange spending over ten percent of your year in a country where you don't speak the language. It's true that I am familiar with Japanese and can get by, but the reality is, I don't speak it. It can be quite isolating at times, still yet I feel like I also blend in. When I move around throughout Japan, people see me as a "local" assuming I speak Japanese until I either pull out my passport or Google translate. My friend did tell me that I give off a non-Japanese vibe and they can tell by looking at me, while at the same time, others told me, just by my face, they assume I speak Japanese. Despite this, I move around like a local, know the ins and outs of certain neighborhoods and even can navigate to the best exits in Shinjuku Station, which is impressive even for a local. Am I assimilated? In life, sometimes we find ourselves in limbo. We're not quite the insider, yet not quite an outsider. We blend in, yet we don't. While we are accepted, sometimes we may not feel the fluidity that we had hoped. As I spent my final day wandering around Ueno, I thought about how this past month, actually has flown by. I've loved almost every moment despite the rare moments of downtime. Although I've been around only a few people who could speak English, no matter what, aside from maybe 1-2% of the time, I've felt welcomed and accommodated. The sadness that comes with separating from close friends is a pain I've become used to as I received messages with an emphatic "NOOOOOOO!" as I say my goodbyes. Of course those goodbyes have become less of a final farewell, but more of a またね, as I know I will see most of them again; maybe that's truly when you've become assimilated. I worked about 50% of the time, but it still left me with another half to explore and enjoy a less touristy experience and a more local vibe. Just hanging out and not trying to hit all the touristy spots. Soon, I will pass through the security gates and cross the Pacific once again. To those who helped me move from isolation to assimilation over the years, I thank you and aside from thank you, all I have left to says is またね.

~:[CH13 - Day 183]:~ Be Happy, Be Yourself

~:[CH13 - Day 183]:~ Be Happy, Be Yourself

Everytime I've come to Tokyo, I've tried to get a reservation at the Pokemon Cafe without any luck. It's hard enough waiting until 2am, but then you have to deal with the tech issues and even the battle against bots. I got so many responses asking how I got it since I finally went and I was able to find a service to do it on my first try with them. It was worth it to go there once. It felt a little strange going there alone, but at the same time, I was glad I did it. In life, it's easy to make decisions based on how others will view it or if other are doing it, but at some point, you have to do what makes you happy, by doing something you love. You'll find a community who will love it and those who love you, will support you. Don't let the judgements of others guide you, rather heed advice and ultimately decide what is best for you. In life, we have a mountain of responsibilities, but the most important one is to be happy by being yourself.
