~:[CH13 - Day 236]:~ Smart Money

~:[CH13 - Day 236]:~ Smart Money

It may seem like they're just doing busy work if you walked into class, but they're really crunching numbers. In California, there is a lot of talk of the need for financial literacy, but for years, we've been looking at this very topic, hoping they can make good decisions. In my first assignment, I always break the class into families. They apply for jobs, receive their salary info and then have to decide on where to live and budget for all the things they've enjoyed their entire life. It's fun to see them crunch the numbers. They have to cut things out they're used to as they think of things they don't need and realize how much more they need to save, just to cover the basics, especially after we complete our taxes. I think this also helps them think when they ultimately decide on the college of their choice. They need to figure out exactly what the cost benefits of each school is, although it's not an easy thing to figure out. Still yet, I hope that they have a better understanding of how the world works and all the things they need to be prepared for, as the road ahead will be a much easier one, if they're able to plan ahead. I hope that they can find the jobs that will give them what they need, while also giving them to ability to enjoy their lives as well, as one of the other topics we always touch is making sure you have a good work-life balance as well.
