Mr. Walker always has a theme around his speech and tonight's centered around Maya Angelou's Caged Bird. Today kind of felt similar to that transition of freedom. The morning stress of tech not working and delaying my process weighed me down, but just hours later, I would be celebrating in the joyous occasion with these seniors. Similarly, in our lives, we may face much heavier moments that leave us hopeless and unmotived. It's easy to feel demoralized when life tests us and makes us feel caged up. These seniors experienced that as in their first year, they were caged. After starting up their freshman year, COVID locked them down. For all it was tough, but for some, it was tougher than for others. It was easy for them to feel confined and locked away as they dreamt for freedom for this pandemic. Fast-forward three years and this same class of students found their way to that freedom. For them, you could sense the joyous moments as they celebrated reaching this pinnacle of their high school career, the finish line. While some may still be finding their way, many have soared to even greater heights, as they understand the importance of this freedom that may have been taken for granted before. As while they struggled, losing focus along the way and needing a little kick in the rear here and there, in the end, they reached this beautiful moment. Our traditional fireworks lit the night's sky as I saw hugs and cheer, I saw tears, and I definitely saw a group of young adults reading to soar. Congratulations to the class of 2023!
