this box

this box sits in the corner
i have not had the heart
to leave it by the roadside
not knowing where i'd restart

the precious memories that lie within
have been mended to my soul
as if i let this box depart
i know, never again could i be whole

what is it that binds me so
i could never point it out
yet these things contained within these walls
is what my life has been about

for years of deep connections
a picture, a charm, a gift
in the best times and the worst times
providing warmth, a smile, a lift

as when i seal its contents
when i leave it out for one to take
i'd know in an instant
that it might be my biggest mistake

this box still sits in the corner
it still stares right back at me
showing me things so amazing
that only my eyes can see

it tells me stories from the past
it shows me things i couldn't recall
happy, in laughter, painful, in tears
a range of emotions, it contains them all

this box, it still sits in the corner
should it go or should it stay
as while it may no longer weigh me down
with it, a part of me would be thrown away
