~:[CH5 - Day 312]:~ May History Not Repeat Itself
The only thing funny about today may have been my voting number. 000069. I am disheartened that someone who portrayed himself in such a negative light for so long with blatant obscene and discriminatory public comments could rise to the highest office in the land. I feel sorry for the parents who must explain this election to their children, as they see history being written right before their eyes - one of the ugliest elections in our nation's history. However, I am not here to complain, I am here to pray for our country that history does not repeat itself. In the many lessons I have taught in history, I have talked how people have swayed drastically from one side to the other, sometimes leading to some of the worst atrocities of our time. It's no wonder that such a large group of people came out and voted and allowed their voices to be heard from the primaries to the general election. For those who did not vote or took it as a joke, I remind you that the future of our country was at stake and voting must always be taken seriously. Regardless of the outcome of this election, I only hope that history does not repeat itself. The majority has spoken and if you truly believe in a democracy, you will join me in praying for our country, that we tip in the right direction. With the stock market already tumbling, we must not fight, but see what we can do to try and make this work, whether we like our next president or not. I've thought long and hard about this. Divisiveness will only continue to tear the fabric of this country apart and while that may be in our future, we should at least give democracy a chance. I am not going to blindly follow our new president. I specifically became independent because I did not want to blindly follow a party. Much like our founding fathers said that divisive parties are "to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution" (John Adams) and that this divide "kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which find a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions." (George Washington) However, in the very near future, if not while I am writing this post, we will have a new President-elect. I am hoping that this person sees what is best for all of us as a nation and not is what is best for Democrats or Republicans. Not what is best for those who are male or female, gay or straight, white or black, Christian or Muslim, born in the US or not, but what is best for us all. Whether we like it or not, there will be great changes ahead for us, within the parties, within our government, and within our world; and we can only pray that we write a chapter in these books that will talk about the unity we had moving forward from such tumultuous times, rather than the destruction of something that once was so great. I pray that our country does not take any steps backwards tonight. Rather than dismantle everything that has been created over the years, I hope that the focus is on fixing what needs to be fixed. Rather than focusing on what someone wants, I hope that everyone can focus on what we all need. This year's campaign cycle has brought so much negativity and so much ugliness from droves of people around the countries and even when we look at ourselves, this election has also changed us. It is our job individually to first focus on fixing ourselves and taking a step to try to see the potential that this great nation has. As I take a look at my ballot number, I let out one last painful laugh before I go to sleep. Tomorrow, I will probably feel saddened, but I will pray. I will pray that I will not get angry, that I will not argue, that I will not complain, no matter how much pain I am, as democracy has spoken and I only pray that some of the history I've known does not repeat itself. I will not follow blindly, but will give democracy a chance so that we may grow to become united. As while there is so much to say, I will speak no more, as it's time to pray for us all.
