Our speaker from the Permanent Mission to the UN from the Republic of Korea included a quote from the former Secretary General Dag Dag Hammarskjöld which stated, "It has been said that the United Nations was not created in order to bring us to heaven, but in order to save us from hell." The students began their first major day of the conference as they were up and ready by 9:30am for their mission briefing and debated late into the night withe the last group getting out at 10:50pm. I walked along the hallway while checking rooms and thought about that meme where it shows what people think I am doing, what my "(insert person here" thinks I am doing, and what I am actually doing. I think most people think me and these students are sitting around enjoying all of New York. While we did get to enjoy touring the city, today was a reminder of how much work is required of these students are they go to these conference. Many of them were tired, both mentally and physically, and they had to try to maneuver the landscape of a Model UN conference running on just a few hours of sleep, as they finished at 11:00pm the night before. Still yet, they look energized, they worked hard to bring their groups together and do their best to find solutions that could help the world from going the wrong direction. As our speaker closed out this morning, he stated that they UN wasn't created to create the perfect solutions (although they do hope to find these solutions), it was created to find solutions that could help address these issues before they became problems that could not be resolved. Our own students have taken that purpose on their shoulders as they do their best to simulation the same. While their resolutions may not be real-world ones submitted to the Secretary General, their ideas are still real and could be the start of solutions that can become a reality in the future. By night's end, they were exhausted, yet they still were anticipating the next full day ahead, which will close out their exhausting week.
